What is crabgrass?
Crabgrass is an annual weed that pops up in lawns, gardens, driveway, walkways and more. Aptly named, crabgrass is tough, has many stems, and is built low to the ground. Crabgrass sprouts in late spring and will continue to grow all summer. It actually thrives on the hot, dry summer weather when the rest of your grass seems to not be as happy. In the fall, before crabgrass dies off, it produces thousands of seeds that can germinate the following spring.
Ways to control it
Depending on where the crabgrass is growing will determine what product you can use to kill, or control it. There are many granular and spray products that can be used to kill or prevent crabgrass. Here are a few of our favorites.
In the lawn
Jonathan Green Veri-Green with Crabgrass Control. This product PREVENTS crabgrass from germinating in your lawn. Apply in early spring, preferably before April 15th. To apply this product, follow the spreader settings on the back of the bag, apply to a dry lawn and water (or rain) in. DO NOT apply to newly seeded lawns or where you plan to plant new seed within the next 6-8 weeks. Since this product is combined with a fertilizer, your grass will also get a nice spring boost.
Bayer All-in-One Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer. Available in a hose end or hand spray. Kills established crabgrass but will NOT prevent crabgrass from germinating. This product also kills dandelions and tons of other lawn weeds, without killing your lawn.
In the patio, driveway, walkway
Our go-to natural option for non-selective (kills everything) weed control is Bonide BurnOut. This product works quick and is safe to use! No harsh chemicals, safe for organic gardening. This product works best when applied on a warm, dry day. Be very careful how you spray if the crabgrass is near plants you want to keep, this will kill or harm your delicate plants.
If your looking for a traditional, chemical product to take care of crabgrass in your patio, driveway, walkway areas, DuraZone is amazing. This product kills and PREVENTS weeds (including crabgrass) for up to 6 months! Spray when the ground is dry and the sun is out.
